HSDF supports key stakeholders at all levels of government and the private sector to achieve measurable and sustainable impact.
HSDF focuses on evidence, rigor, continuous improvement, and results at scale, through substantive engagements that cover conceptual design, long-term strategy, and implementation. By doing so, HSDF seeks to address complex and fundamental health system challenges and ultimately impact the transformation of the health and social sectors in Nigeria and Africa. We focus on improving existing processes and where necessary, deviate from the status quo to introduce transformative and sustainable processes and ideas. Job Title: Business Development Specialist

The Grant and Business Development Specialist will drive HSDF’s grants acquisition and business development efforts by identifying and assessing funding opportunities, strengthening donor and partner relationships, and leading or supporting the development of high-quality proposals and related materials. The Specialist will manage the business development pipeline, provide donor and market intelligence, and contribute to strategies that expand HSDF’s portfolio, visibility, and impact. The role will also provide technical and analytical support to client engagements, manage assigned workstreams, support quality delivery, and build staff capacity in grants, proposal development, and business development.
Business Development, Partnerships and Growth:
Implement the organization’s business development strategy, processes, and pipeline management systems to support sustainable growth and expansion. Monitor donor priorities, market trends, and emerging opportunities across the local & international development sector to identify and pursue relevant funding opportunities, including with bilateral and multilateral donors. Provide timely donor intelligence and opportunity analysis, including tracking priorities and funding mechanisms of key donors, and other relevant development partners. Identify, assess, and pursue strategic partnerships with local, regional, and international organizations, including opportunities to participate as a lead agency, consortium partner, or subcontractor. Build and maintain relationships with regional and global development-sector stakeholders, partners, and donors to strengthen the organization’s positioning and access to new opportunities. Lead or support the development of high-quality funding proposals, concept notes, expressions of interest, budgets, capability statements, and other business development materials, ensuring alignment with specific donor requirements. Identify opportunities to expand existing engagements, develop new areas of work, and contribute innovative ideas that support organizational growth and impact. Produce regular business development reports for executive management, including pipeline analysis, opportunity tracking, win/loss analysis, and recommendations for strategic action.
Contribute to organizational strategy development and implementation by providing insights from market intelligence, donor trends, client engagements, and emerging opportunities. Support the organization’s positioning and visibility within the health and social development sectors through strategic partnerships, thought leadership, and high-quality technical outputs. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree qualification from a recognized university. A Master's degree or Doctorate degree is preferred. At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrated experience in business development, fundraising, grants acquisition, proposal development, or client development, preferably within the public health, international development, consulting, or related sectors. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Fluent in spoken and written English Proven cultural, social and political sensitivity of working in Nigeria or other low and middle-income countries at different levels of government. Proven analytical skills, time management skills, writing ability, and written and oral communications skills in English. Must be able to work collaboratively with others in a participative management environment, working independently as well as working in a team Must be able to take initiative where appropriate, proffer solutions to bottlenecks and challenges Demonstrated expertise in applying rigorous analytical skills to understand and improve public health programs Strong organizational and project management skills.
