Project Overview
Applied Water Resources Management in the Lake Chad Basin II:
This regional initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Lake Chad Basin Commission, aims to enhance the LCBC's capacity to advise member countries on environmentally friendly, climate-adaptive, gender-sensitive, and conflict-reducing transboundary water resource management.
The Lake Chad Basin Commission and its member states (Cameroon, Chad, CAR, Nigeria, Niger, and Libya) face ongoing multifaceted challenges, including Lake Chad's gradual drying, climate variability, recurrent droughts, population pressure, and increasing insecurity.
To address these issues, the LCBC has developed strategic documents reflecting member countries' commitment to transforming the Lake Chad Basin into a sustainable socio-economic development zone for its 50 million inhabitants. These documents include the Strategic Action Program (SAP) 2023-2027, the Regional Stabilization Strategy, and the LCBC Vision 2025.
The GIZ-implemented project provides crucial support to the LCBC in implementing the Water Charter and the Strategic Action Program (SAP) for 2023-2037.
The project focuses on three results with six performance indicators, two for each result, across three intervention levels: central (supporting the LCBC Executive Secretariat), regional (assisting LCBC member countries), and local (supporting stakeholders in transboundary sub-basins).
