Job Title: Electrical Engineer
Location: Lagos Job Description
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the planning, design coordination, supervision, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment on construction projects. The role ensures that electrical works are delivered safely, efficiently, within approved specifications, budget, and project timelines, and in compliance with applicable engineering standards and statutory requirements.
Review electrical drawings, designs, specifications, BOQs, and project requirements. Interpret and coordinate electrical designs with architectural, structural, civil, and mechanical works. Review shop drawings, material submittals, equipment schedules, and technical proposals. Identify design clashes and technical issues and recommend appropriate solutions. Ensure electrical designs and installations are practical, safe, efficient, and fit for purpose. Assist in design development and modifications where required.
Plan and coordinate electrical activities in line with the approved project programme. Supervise the execution of electrical installations and ensure timely completion. Monitor progress against approved schedules and identify potential delays. Coordinate electrical activities with other project disciplines. Prepare and review method statements, work plans, and installation procedures. Ensure adequate manpower, materials, tools, and equipment are available for electrical works.
Supervise electrical contractors, subcontractors, technicians, electricians, and other site personnel. Monitor the installation of power distribution systems, lighting, cabling, containment, earthing, generators, transformers, panels, and other electrical systems. Ensure installations are carried out in accordance with approved drawings and specifications. Inspect workmanship and identify defective or non-compliant works. Provide technical guidance and clarification to site teams and contractors. Ensure proper sequencing and coordination of electrical works.
Ensure electrical works comply with approved quality standards, specifications, and applicable codes. Conduct inspections and coordinate testing of electrical installations. Review Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), checklists, and quality records. Identify non-conformities and ensure timely corrective actions. Verify that electrical materials and equipment comply with approved specifications. Monitor workmanship to minimise defects and rework.
Develop and coordinate electrical testing and commissioning activities. Supervise testing of electrical systems, equipment, and installations. Verify system performance against approved design requirements. Coordinate commissioning activities with mechanical, civil, architectural, and other project teams. Ensure all identified defects are resolved before final commissioning. Review and maintain testing and commissioning records.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance:
Ensure all electrical activities comply with company and project HSE requirements. Enforce safe electrical work practices, including appropriate isolation and lockout/tagout procedures. Participate in toolbox meetings, risk assessments, safety inspections, and permit-to-work activities. Identify and report electrical hazards, incidents, near misses, and unsafe practices. Ensure electrical personnel use appropriate PPE and follow approved safe work procedures.
Prepare electrical material and equipment requirements based on project scope. Review and verify delivered electrical materials and equipment against approved specifications. Monitor proper storage, handling, and utilisation of electrical materials. Minimise material wastage and prevent misuse or damage of project resources. Coordinate with Procurement and Stores to ensure timely availability of required materials.
ontractor & Stakeholder Management:
Monitor electrical contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with project requirements. Review contractor work programmes and monitor progress. Attend project coordination, technical, and progress meetings. Liaise with clients, consultants, suppliers, and other stakeholders on electrical matters. Monitor contractor performance and ensure timely resolution of technical issues. Support the Project Manager in managing electrical-related stakeholder concerns.
Monitor electrical works against approved project scope and budget. Identify potential variations, additional works, and scope changes and report them promptly. Support the Quantity Surveyor in reviewing electrical quantities and variations. Recommend cost-effective electrical solutions without compromising safety, quality, or functionality. Monitor material usage and minimise unnecessary expenditure and rework.
Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on electrical activities and progress. Maintain accurate records of inspections, testing, commissioning, material approvals, and technical submissions. Prepare and track RFIs, inspection requests, technical queries, and snag lists. Maintain updated electrical drawings and document registers. Assist with preparation of as-built drawings, operation manuals, warranties, test certificates, and handover documents.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Percentage of electrical works completed within approved project timelines. Compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable electrical standards. Reduction in electrical defects, failures, and rework. Timely completion of electrical testing and commissioning. Compliance with HSE requirements and reduction in electrical-related incidents. Efficient utilisation of electrical materials, equipment, and labour. Timely closure of electrical snags and non-conformities. Timely submission of electrical reports and technical documentation. Contractor/subcontractor performance against approved programmes. Client and consultant satisfaction with electrical works. Successful completion of electrical systems within approved cost, quality, and schedule requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in electrical engineering within the construction industry. Proven experience in building, infrastructure, industrial, commercial, or residential construction projects. Professional certification/membership such as COREN, NSE, or other relevant professional body is an added advantage. Strong knowledge of electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and construction practices. Knowledge of relevant electrical codes, standards, building regulations, and HSE requirements. Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant electrical engineering/design software.
