Role Overview


The primary objective of this position is to plan, organize, and execute laboratory activities while supervising laboratory staff in accordance with MSF protocols, security measures, and hygiene standards. The goal is to support the MSF medical team in accurately diagnosing patient conditions.


Key Responsibilities


Contribute to project planning and follow-up, and review the laboratory budget as needed to support MSF's medical activities.
Ensure adherence to MSF hygiene and safety protocols, both individually and collectively, while informing staff of existing biological risks.
Conduct laboratory tests and sample collection (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology) as prescribed, and ensure regular quality control tests are performed. Notify doctors of test results and maintain records of analyses with patient data.
Oversee proper management (cleaning, maintenance, organization) of all laboratory equipment and ensure adequate supply of necessary equipment and materials to prevent stockouts. This includes responsibility for all required automatic instrument calibration, ensuring no material leaves laboratories without prior authorization, and implementing proper storage systems and conditions, inventory, etc. Collaborate with the logistics department to maintain proper cold chain in Laboratory areas for both samples and reagents.
In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, ensure proper registration and needs assessment of all lab-related activities and implement correct use of associated management tools (e.g., EpyTryp) to maintain accurate records of laboratory activities. Prepare and send slides/samples for external quality control.
Supervise, in close coordination with the HR department, the associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, coaching, evaluation, potential detection, development, and communication) of staff under your responsibility to ensure both the required sizing and knowledge levels.
Ensure all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Verify that cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to protocols.
Report any malfunctions to the project biomedical service.
Generate regular reports on testing and any issues/problems related to laboratory personnel and/or materials used.


Qualifications


Degree in Medical Laboratory Science
2 - 4 years of laboratory work experience, with at least one year in an NGO setting.
Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Hausa languages is essential.
Basic computer knowledge and skills (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook), demonstrated leadership/management experience, ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment
Strong people management skills, commitment, flexibility, results-orientation, teamwork, and stress management abilities.
