Laboratory Supervisor

Position Summary


The primary objective of this role is to plan, organize, and execute laboratory activities while overseeing laboratory staff in accordance with MSF protocols, security measures, and hygiene standards. The goal is to support the MSF medical team in accurately diagnosing patient illnesses.


Key Duties


Contribute to project planning, follow-up, and laboratory budget reviews as needed to support MSF's medical initiatives.
Ensure adherence to MSF hygiene and safety protocols, both individually and collectively, while informing staff about existing biological risks.
Conduct laboratory tests and sample collection (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology) as prescribed, and ensure regular quality control tests. Communicate test results to doctors and maintain patient data records.
Oversee proper management (cleaning, maintenance, organization) of all laboratory equipment and ensure adequate supply of necessary materials to prevent stockouts. This includes responsibility for automatic instrument calibration, controlling laboratory material removal, and maintaining proper storage systems and conditions, inventory, etc. Collaborate with logistics to maintain proper cold chain in laboratory areas for samples and reagents.
In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, ensure proper registration and management of all lab-related activities, implementing correct use of associated management tools (e.g., EpyTryp). Prepare and send slides/samples for external quality control.
Supervise, in coordination with HR, the associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, coaching, evaluation, potential detection, development, and communication) for staff under your responsibility to ensure appropriate sizing and knowledge levels.
Verify that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensure cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to protocols.
Report any malfunctions to the project biomedical service.
Generate regular reports on testing and any issues related to laboratory personnel or materials used.


Qualifications


Degree in Medical Laboratory Science
2-4 years of laboratory work experience, with at least one year in an NGO setting.
Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Hausa is essential.
Basic computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook), demonstrated leadership/management experience, ability to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments
