Location: Uyo, Akwa Ibom

Employment Type: Full-time Job Summary

The Tower Crane Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tower cranes to lift, move, position and lower construction materials and equipment across the project site. The role requires substantial experience operating tower cranes on large-scale construction projects, sound technical knowledge, strict adherence to lifting procedures, and a strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

Operate tower cranes safely to lift, move and position construction materials, including reinforcement bars, formwork, steel components, concrete skips and other building materials. Conduct pre-operational inspections and functional checks of the crane, including hoisting mechanisms, brakes, limit switches, wire ropes, hooks and safety devices. Verify load weights, lifting capacity, load charts, working radius and applicable crane limitations before each lifting operation. Coordinate lifting activities with riggers, banksmen, signalers and lifting supervisors using approved hand signals or radio communication. Ensure all lifting operations comply with approved lift plans, exclusion zones, site safety procedures and applicable regulations. Monitor weather conditions, particularly wind speed, and stop operations whenever conditions exceed the crane manufacturer's safe operating limits. Maintain accurate records of crane inspections, operating hours, maintenance observations and equipment defects. Report mechanical faults, abnormal noises, equipment damage and unsafe working conditions immediately. Work closely with site engineers, supervisors and other construction personnel to support efficient project execution. Maintain the crane cab and operating area in a clean, safe and orderly condition. Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, equipment maintenance activities and incident investigations when required. Ensure the crane is secured and placed in the manufacturer's prescribed out-of-service condition at the end of operations or when adverse weather requires shutdown. Refrain from operating defective equipment or carrying out lifts without the necessary authorization and safety controls.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Zero crane-related fatalities, injuries or preventable incidents attributable to unsafe operation. 100% completion of required pre-operational checks and inspection records. Compliance with approved lifting plans and safe working load limits. Minimal equipment downtime attributable to operator negligence. Timely and accurate reporting of equipment defects and safety hazards. Efficient execution of assigned lifting activities in line with approved construction schedules. Compliance with site safety rules, operating procedures and supervisory instructions.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum of 5 years of proven experience operating tower cranes on major high rise building or civil engineering projects. Relevant technical, vocational or trade training in crane operation or heavy equipment operation. Valid tower crane operator certification or demonstrable competence recognised by the employer and applicable regulatory requirements. Demonstrated knowledge of crane load charts, lifting capacities, working radii, safe working loads and basic rigging principles. Familiarity with construction site safety procedures, lifting plans, hazard identification and risk assessment. Experience working on high-rise buildings, large commercial developments or similar construction projects is an advantage. Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with lifting teams and site personnel. Physically and medically fit for the demands of the role, including working at height where applicable.

Key Competencies:

Technical proficiency in tower crane operation. Strong safety awareness and risk management. Excellent concentration, precision and spatial awareness. Effective communication and teamwork. Ability to follow instructions and respond appropriately to emergencies. Reliability, discipline and attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure and meet construction schedules without compromising safety.

Working Conditions:

The role is site-based and involves working at height inside a crane cab, extended periods of concentration, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and coordination with multiple construction teams. Shift work, weekend work or extended hours may be required in line with project demands and applicable labour requirements.
