Job Title: Basic / Primary Assistant Tutor

The Primary Class Assistant Tutor will support the Class Teacher in delivering effective teaching and learning to primary school pupils. The Assistant Tutor will help create a positive, well-organised and engaging classroom environment, provide additional support to pupils who require assistance, and contribute to the academic, social and emotional development of pupils. The successful candidate should be patient, caring, energetic, organised and passionate about working with children. He/She should be able to work closely with the Class Teacher and other members of staff to ensure that pupils receive appropriate academic and pastoral support.

Assist the Class Teacher in preparing and delivering classroom activities and learning experiences. Support pupils during lessons, group work, practical activities and independent tasks. Provide one-on-one or small-group support to pupils who need additional assistance. Reinforce concepts taught by the Class Teacher through appropriate activities and practice. Assist with reading, phonics, handwriting, spelling, numeracy and other foundational learning activities. Help prepare teaching and learning resources, worksheets, displays and classroom materials. Support differentiated learning activities to meet the varying abilities and learning needs of pupils.

Assist the Class Teacher in maintaining a calm, safe, orderly and stimulating classroom environment. Monitor pupils' behaviour and encourage compliance with the school's rules and expectations. Help pupils develop good manners, discipline, independence and positive social skills. Support the supervision of pupils during transitions, break times, assemblies, trips and other school activities.

Provide appropriate academic, emotional and practical support to pupils. Observe pupils' participation, behaviour and learning progress and report concerns to the Class Teacher. Encourage pupils who may lack confidence or require additional motivation. Promote inclusiveness and ensure that pupils feel valued, respected and supported. Follow the school's safeguarding, health and safety and child-protection procedures at all times.

Assist the Class Teacher with marking classwork, homework and selected assessments. Help maintain accurate records of pupils' work, participation and progress. Provide useful observations and feedback to the Class Teacher regarding pupils' strengths and areas requiring improvement. Support the preparation of learning materials and pupil portfolios where required.

Work collaboratively with the Class Teacher, Head of Primary and other members of staff. Maintain professional and respectful relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues. Communicate relevant pupil concerns or observations promptly to the appropriate member of staff. Participate in staff meetings, training programmes and professional development activities.

Participate actively in school events, extracurricular activities and special programmes. Maintain confidentiality regarding pupils, families and school matters. Uphold the school's values, policies, procedures and professional standards. Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the Class Teacher, Head of Primary or School Management.

Educational Qualification

NCE, OND, First School Leaving Certificate

B.Ed./B.A./B.Sc. with a relevant education qualification. NCE in Primary Education or a related discipline. Relevant teaching, phonics, classroom management or child-development certification. Fresh graduates with strong communication skills, a genuine passion for teaching and relevant teaching practice/teaching experience may also be considered.

1–2 years' experience working with primary school-aged children in a school, tutoring centre, learning centre or similar educational environment.

Previous experience as a teaching assistant, assistant teacher, classroom assistant, tutor or primary school teacher. Experience supporting pupils individually or in small groups. Experience with phonics, literacy and numeracy instruction. Experience working in a structured primary school environment.

Good communication and interpersonal skills. Strong spoken and written English. Patience, empathy and a genuine interest in working with children. Good classroom management skills. Ability to engage and motivate young learners. Ability to work effectively as part of a teaching team. Good organisation and time-management skills. Basic assessment and record-keeping skills. Creativity in developing and using teaching resources. Basic ICT/digital literacy and ability to use educational technology. Ability to follow instructions and school procedures. Good observation and problem-solving skills. Positive attitude, initiative and willingness to learn. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality. A strong commitment to child safeguarding and pupil welfare.

Knowledge of phonics and early literacy strategies. Familiarity with the British/Nigerian primary curriculum. Experience supporting children with different learning abilities. Basic knowledge of inclusive education and differentiated instruction. Training in first aid or child safeguarding would be an advantage.
