 Job Title: Coating / Painting Inspector

Location: Port Harcourt - Rivers

Reports to: Coating Engineer / QC Engineer

Supervises: None Role Purpose

Inspect surface preparation and protective coating application on pipelines, tanks, structures, and facilities to verify compliance with approved coating specifications, manufacturer requirements, environmental limits, and inspection test plans.


Key Responsibilities

Review coating specifications, product data sheets, safety data sheets, procedures, ITPs, qualification records, and repair criteria before application. Verify substrate condition, surface defects, cleanliness, soluble-salt/chloride levels, dust, surface profile, and preparation grade before coating. Monitor ambient and steel temperatures, relative humidity, dew point, ventilation, and weather conditions throughout preparation and application. Confirm coating materials are approved, within shelf life, correctly stored, batch traceable, and mixed/thinned within manufacturer limits. Witness application and measure wet-film and dry-film thickness, recoat intervals, curing, adhesion, hardness, holiday continuity, and visual finish as required. Inspect field joints, weld areas, edges, stripe coats, difficult-access locations, lining systems, and repairs for complete coverage and specified build. Raise and track coating defects, repair recommendations, NCR inputs, and reinspection results with clear location traceability. Maintain calibrated inspection instruments and complete daily coating reports, environmental logs, material usage records, and final coating dossiers. Coordinate access, scaffolding, rope access, confined-space controls, and inspection timing with construction and HSE personnel.

Qualifications and Experience

Technical Diploma / HND or bachelor’s degree in Materials, Metallurgical, Mechanical, Chemical, or a related discipline. Typically 5 or more years of coating/painting inspection experience on oil and gas pipelines, tanks, offshore structures, or process facilities. Hands-on competence with surface-profile, environmental, DFT, adhesion, holiday, and soluble-salt testing equipment. Knowledge of common liquid coatings, linings, FBE, 3LPE/3LPP, fireproofing, insulation coatings, and repair systems as relevant. Ability to work at height, offshore, in confined spaces, or under rope access when specifically trained and authorised.


Preferred Certifications and Standards Knowledge:

AMPP/NACE Coating Inspector Level 2 or equivalent is strongly preferred; Level 1 may be accepted for supervised assignments. Rope-access certification is advantageous where the inspection plan requires it. Working knowledge of SSPC-SP 5, SP 10, SP 11; AMPP/NACE SP0188 and relevant project coating standards.

Reporting and Interfaces:

Internal interfaces: Coating/corrosion engineering, construction, QC, materials, scaffolding/rope access, and HSE teams. External interfaces: Client coating inspectors, coating applicators, paint manufacturers, laboratories, and specialist contractors.
