Job Title: Operations Manager

Job Description

  • The Operations Manager is essentially the second-in-command to the General Manager (or acts as GM if the hotel is family-run).
  • As the hotel is modest in size, the Operations Manager takes on multiple roles — overseeing daily operations, coordinating departments, managing staff, ensuring guest satisfaction, and maintaining profitability.

Responsibilities
General Hotel Oversight:

  • Daily Supervision: Oversee all departments (Front Desk, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Marketing, Finance).
  • Guest Experience: Ensure guests receive consistent, high-quality service throughout their stay.
  • Problem Solving: Act as the escalation point for guest complaints or staff issues.
  • Shift Coverage: Step in when supervisors are absent or during emergencies.

Staff & Department Coordination:

  • Scheduling: Approve staff rosters for all departments to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Training: Organize cross-training sessions to improve staff skills and service standards.
  • Performance Monitoring: Evaluate department supervisors (front desk, housekeeping, marketing, finance) and provide coaching.
  • HR Liaison: Work with HR/owners on hiring, staff discipline, and retention strategies.

Financial & Administrative Oversight:

  • Revenue Monitoring: Review daily sales reports (rooms, restaurant/bar, events).
  • Cost Control: Monitor major expenses (diesel/generator, supplies, payroll).
  • Budget Support: Assist Accounts & Finance Manager in forecasting and budget reviews.
  • Vendor Management: Approve purchases, negotiate with suppliers, and ensure timely payments.

Guest Services & Quality Control:

  • Room & Facility Checks: Inspect rooms and public areas for cleanliness and maintenance issues.
  • Standards Compliance: Enforce hotel SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for service, safety, and hygiene.
  • Events Oversight: Supervise weddings, conferences, and banquets to ensure smooth execution.
  • VIP Handling: Personally welcome and check on VIP/corporate/NGO guests.

Safety, Security & Maintenance:

  • Security Oversight: Coordinate with security staff to ensure guest and staff safety.
  • Health & Safety: Enforce compliance with Nigerian health/safety standards.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Ensure regular checks on rooms, ACs, plumbing, generators, and kitchen equipment.
  • Crisis Management: Prepare for emergencies (power outages, fire, medical issues).

Marketing & Community Relations:

  • Local Partnerships: Collaborate with NGOs, government agencies, and corporates in Yola for steady bookings.
  • Event Marketing: Support the marketing team in promoting the banquet hall, restaurant, and special packages.
  • Community Engagement: Build goodwill with the local community and media (radio, churches, mosques, local businesses).
  • Guest Feedback: Review guest satisfaction surveys and online reviews to improve service.
