Position Overview


The Agricultural Economist will be tasked with conducting economic research and analysis related to agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural development.
This role involves applying economic principles to enhance agricultural productivity, sustainability, and profitability.
The Agricultural Economist will aid in policy development, project planning, agribusiness strategy, and investment decision-making through rigorous economic evaluation and data-driven recommendations.


Primary Responsibilities


Perform economic analysis of agricultural production, market trends, value chains, and rural development.
Create and implement models to assess the impact of agricultural policies, pricing structures, and subsidies.
Assess the economic viability of agricultural projects and agribusiness investments.
Examine supply and demand trends for agricultural products at local, national, and international levels.
Track and interpret economic data, market conditions, and sectoral reports to support strategic planning.
Contribute to the design and implementation of agricultural development programs and projects.
Offer technical input for feasibility studies, cost-benefit analysis, and economic impact assessments.
Work with agronomists, policymakers, extension officers, and stakeholders to align economic insights with practical field realities.
Develop reports, briefing papers, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Assist with grant proposals and donor reporting by providing economic justifications and value-for-money assessments.


Qualifications and Experience


Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, or a related field
Minimum of 5 years of experience in agricultural economic research, policy analysis, or project evaluation.
Demonstrated experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative research in the agriculture sector.
Comprehensive knowledge of agricultural markets, rural development, and food security issues.
Proficiency with statistical software and economic modeling tools.
Experience working with government agencies, development partners, or agribusiness firms is advantageous.
