 Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: Maryland, Lagos

Employment Type: Full-time Responsibilities

Perform a variety of laboratory tests and analyses on patient specimens, including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids, using manual and automated techniques and equipment. Prepare and handle patient samples, following established procedures for sample collection, processing, labeling, and storage to ensure accuracy, integrity, and traceability of specimens. Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, such as microscopes, centrifuges, analyzers, and other specialized equipment, performing routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting as needed. Conduct quality control and quality assurance procedures to verify the accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results, documenting and addressing any deviations or discrepancies according to laboratory protocols. Analyze test results, interpret findings, and prepare reports or summaries for review by healthcare providers, documenting and communicating results accurately and confidentially. Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and pathologists, to discuss test results, clinical findings, and patient care plans, providing expertise and guidance as needed. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and patient consultations to contribute to diagnostic decision-making and treatment planning. Maintain laboratory safety protocols and standards, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials, adherence to infection control measures, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Stay updated on advances in laboratory technology, testing methodologies, and medical research, participating in continuing education, training programs, and professional development activities. Assist in the development and validation of new laboratory tests, procedures, and protocols, collaborating with laboratory management and research teams to improve diagnostic capabilities and patient care. Provide guidance and training to laboratory staff, students, and trainees, ensuring proficiency in laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and quality standards. Participate in laboratory accreditation and certification processes, maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies, such as CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and CAP (College of American Pathologists). Collaborate with laboratory management and administration on budgeting, inventory management, and procurement of supplies, reagents, and equipment. Communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, providing instructions, explanations, and support regarding laboratory tests and procedures. Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and empathy in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and stakeholders, maintaining confidentiality and respecting patient rights and privacy.

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or a related field; certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) is required. Completion of an accredited medical laboratory science program, including clinical practicum or internship training in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting. State licensure or certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT), depending on state regulations and requirements. Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation used in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and other laboratory disciplines. Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS), electronic medical records (EMR), and other healthcare software applications used for data entry, result reporting, and information management. Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling, sample processing, and test performance, with the ability to follow standardized protocols and quality control measures. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data, troubleshoot technical issues, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced laboratory environment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, healthcare providers, laboratory staff, and other stakeholders. Adaptability and flexibility in managing changing priorities, workload demands, and emergent situations in the laboratory, such as equipment malfunctions or staffing shortages. Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and adherence to ethical standards and regulatory requirements in laboratory practice.
